Where did SafeAssign go in Blackboard?

Where did SafeAssign go in Blackboard?

You might have noticed that SafeAssign isn’t an option under the Assessments tab when adding content to Blackboard. SafeAssign hasn’t disappeared from Blackboard, it’s just now intergraded into Assignments. Under the same Assessments tab click the Assignment link. One of the options when creating an assignment is “Submission Details”. You now have various options for Plagiarism Tools, better known as SafeAssign.

SafeAssign Assignment Feature

Check “Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign”, if you are interested in student submissions being checked for plagiarism against a number of databases and internet sources. This will produce an originality report for files that are submitted for this assignment that are PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, RTF, or TXT files. Check “Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts”, if you are interested in students being able to see their own documents originality reports. This is great tool to teach about plagiarism and the importance of citations.

Check “Exclude submissions from the Institutional and Global Reference Databases”, is the same as the old “Save as Draft” option in SafeAssign. You will need to check this option when students will be submitting the same paper multiple times for different assignments. Without checking this option for students submitting draft or multiple revisions, it would show a high percentage of matching in the originality report. You don’t need to check this option if they will be submitting multiple attempts for the exact same assignment. Each new attempt is recognized as originating from the same student and the same assignment, and is not checked against content in previous attempts.

Why is this new integration of SafeAssign in assignments better?

  • You can utilize the In Line Grading feature in the Grade Center of Blackboard.
  • You can easily add rubrics to SafeAssign assignments.
  • You can create group assignment using SafeAssign.
  • You can allow multiple documents to be submitted in a single assignment and be checked for plagiarism.
  • You can allow multiple submissions for a single assignments and it won’t check content against preview attempts.

Do I need to recreate my old SafeAssign prior to the upgrade?

You don’t need to recreate them as new assignments but it would be very beneficial to recreate them with all the new features available in assignments. You can still access SafeAssign reports in the Course Tools area of the instructor Control Panel in Blackboard. This tool will still allow for direct submissions of documents in SafeAssign, if needed.
