Recommended Assessment Approach for Online Courses

Assessments…Assessments… Assessments…this is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching and it presents additional demands when teaching online. By definition, assessments determine and measure learning, are directly related to learning outcomes and are used for grading (Simonson, Smaldino, Albright, & Zvacek, 2009).

3 credit online course assessment approach

Typically, a 3 credit online course will have the following assessment approach to address different learning styles and levels of learning.

•          1 Examination

•          1 Ten-page paper

•          1 Project

•          3 Quizzes (relying heavily on quizzes is discouraged in the online environment due to the ease for cheating)

•          3 Small assignments – minor assignment per two to three modules (short paper, article review, activity report)

•          1 Major assignment per unit

•          12 graded threaded discussions, journals, blogs and/or chats (combined)

Please keep in mind that these are suggested and recommended guidelines you may have to adapt according to your academic discipline. These guidelines were developed by scholars and practitioners in the field of education and technology ( FSU Academic and Professional Program Services, 2011; Simonson, Smaldino, Albright, & Zvacek, 2009)
